Sailor R. Mayes
Bio
My name is Sailor Mayes and I am a senior at Wayne State University. I will be graduating in May of 2023, with a bachelor’s degree in both Political Science and Communication. Being born and raised in Michigan, I grew up on the freshwater lakes and explored the deep forests. I also spent time playing volleyball, taking pictures of nature, rock hunting, watching documentaries, listening to classical rock music, hiking, and spending time with family members and friends.

All of these experiences helped me develop a passion for the nature surrounding me, specifically animals and the bodies of water in which they live. From rescuing cicadas from wasps, to holding jumping spiders by the window-sill of my lakeside house, I knew I wanted my future career to center around helping these creatures out. I am an extremely passionate individual who fights for justice, and knew I wanted to pursue an environmentally-focused career.
For my future career endeavors, I would like to translate my skills and political knowledge I learned in my university degree towards advocating for environmental change. My goal is to become an ecologist and field researcher who works to conserve Michigan’s environment, one region at a time. Having just completed an internship with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently accepting another with Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) I am working toward transitioning my passion into action. If you would like to join me on this journey, please contact me below.
